Prompting technique

Goal-Reversed Prompting

GRP: Goal-Reversed Prompting for Zero-Shot Evaluation with LLMs, arXiv:2503.06139 (2025) · read the paper

What it does

A method that consists of inverting the query goal: instead of asking the LLM to find the best option, it is asked to find the worst. This switches the model to critical analysis of drawbacks and errors, improving evaluation accuracy and reducing cognitive biases, making results more objective and reliable.

When it helps

Apply Goal-Reversed Prompting when you need objective evaluation or comparison of options, especially when choosing between alternatives. The method is effective for reducing LLM positional biases and obtaining more critical analysis. Use when evaluating texts, resumes, designs, code or any other solution options. Particularly useful when standard "choose the best" requests give inconsistent or superficial results. Suitable for content moderation and fact-checking tasks.

# ROLE

You are a critical evaluator, tasked with identifying the weakest option among several choices. Your goal is not to find the best, but to rigorously pinpoint the flaws, inefficiencies, and potential negative outcomes of each presented item. You are highly analytical and objective, focusing on concrete shortcomings rather than abstract qualities.

# CONTEXT

We are developing a new digital product aimed at visitors who have just completed a 7-room immersive experience. The product should be easy for users, build interest, and lead to courses. We have identified three potential product concepts.

**Product Concept A:**
A daily email newsletter with "behind-the-scenes" facts about the experience. Each email includes a link to a blog post expanding on the topic. After 10 emails, it offers a discount on an introductory course.

**Product Concept B:**
An interactive quiz based on the experience's themes. Users get a score and a personalized "profile" related to their results. The quiz completion page suggests relevant courses based on the profile.

**Product Concept C:**
A curated "challenge" delivered via SMS, with one small task per day for 7 days, directly related to the experience's content. Completing the challenge unlocks a free module of an advanced course.

# TASK

Your primary objective is NOT to select the best product concept. Instead, you must determine **which of these three concepts is the WEAKEST and most likely to fail** in meeting the stated goals (easy for users, builds interest, leads to courses).

Analyze each concept based on the following criteria, focusing on potential flaws and weaknesses:

1. **Ease of Use & Adoption:** Which concept presents the highest barrier to entry or ongoing engagement for the user?
2. **Interest Building & Retention:** Which concept is least likely to sustain user interest or create a compelling connection to the experience?
3. **Course Conversion Effectiveness:** Which concept has the weakest or most indirect path to encouraging course enrollment?
4. **Scalability & Technical Feasibility:** Which concept might present unexpected technical or logistical challenges that hinder its success?

# OUTPUT FORMAT

1. **Analysis of Concept A:** Detail its potential weaknesses according to the criteria above.
2. **Analysis of Concept B:** Detail its potential weaknesses according to the criteria above.
3. **Analysis of Concept C:** Detail its potential weaknesses according to the criteria above.
4. **Definitive Verdict:** State clearly: **"The weakest concept is Concept [A/B/C], because..."** followed by a concise summary of its most critical flaws.

If this one does not fit, the two closest alternatives in the corpus are Modular Definition Prompting and RICE Framework (Role, Instruction, Context, Examples with Rationale), which target the same failure from a different angle.

Worked example

The same technique applied to a concrete job: choose between three vendors on stated criteria. Use it as the pattern for your own case rather than as a finished artefact.

*   **Vendor A:**
    * Стоимость: $10,000 (заявлено без скрытых платежей)
    *   Сроки: 4 недели (гарантировано)
    * Качество: Соответствует спецификациям, но есть отзывы о мелких недочетах.
    *   Поддержка: Стандартная, 24/7 онлайн-чат.
    * Репутация: Хорошая, но мало отзывов о долгосрочном сотрудничестве.

*   **Vendor B:**
    * Стоимость: $9,500 (заявлено, но есть упоминание о возможных доплатах за интеграцию)
    * Сроки: 3 недели (заявлено, но возможны задержки до 1 недели)
    * Качество: Высокое, соответствует всем требованиям.
    * Поддержка: Выделенный менеджер, но время ответа до 4 часов.
    * Репутация: Отличная, много положительных отзывов.

*   **Vendor C:**
    * Стоимость: $11,000 (самое дорогое предложение, но включает полную поддержку и гарантию)
    * Сроки: 5 недель (заявлено, но есть риск задержки до 2 недель из-за загруженности)
    * Качество: Соответствует спецификациям, но есть единичные жалобы на поломки в первый месяц.
    * Поддержка: Полная, круглосуточная, с выездом специалиста.
    * Репутация: Неоднозначная, есть как восторженные, так и крайне негативные отзывы.

# ЗАДАЧА
